TTS244 Jeff Deist – Mises Institute

I am listening to #TheTatianaShow with @jeffdeist Click To Tweet

On this episode of The Tatiana Show, we welcome fellow promoter and defender of liberty, Jeff Deist. Jeff is the president of the Mises Institute, an organization created to educate in the Austrian school of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace.

Jeff tells his story of his brother influencing him to the ideas of liberty, meeting Ron Paul in 1988, and eventually working for Dr. Paul on his congressional and presidential campaigns after a tenure as a private practice attorney.

We also get some history of the Mises Institute and its founding in the 1980’s by Lew Rockwell, Murray Rothbard, and Margit Von Mises to promote her husband’s dream of a graduate institute for Austrian economics.

We also get Jeff’s take on the current political climate and his opinions on:

  • Donald Trump and what led him to the presidency and if there’s any influence from Ron Paul or Austrian economics.
  • If the Libertarian party has a place in the 2020 election.
  • Why Libertarianism is a tough sell and does the liberty movement need a leader.

Be sure to listen for Jeff’s thoughts on the current candidates such as Bernie Sanders and Jacob Hornberger, what he sees as the most important war to get out of, and his hope for the future of cryptocurrency and Bitcoin.

About the Guests:

Jeff Deist is president of the Mises Institute, where he serves as a writer, public speaker, and advocate for property, markets, and civil society. He previously worked as a longtime advisor and chief of staff to Congressman Ron Paul, for whom he wrote hundreds of articles and speeches. In his years with Dr. Paul he worked with countless grassroots activists and organizations dedicated to reducing the size and scope of government.

TTS 240 Scott Horton

I am listening to #TheTatianaShow with @scotthortonshow Click To Tweet

Amidst the controversy surrounding U.S. and Iran tensions, I invited back to #TheTatianaShow foreign policy expert and king of anti-war news Scott Horton to discuss the current state of affairs. In his usual style, Scott eviscerates the narrative peddled by the mainstream media and Washington’s warmongers.

As most Americans believe history started on 9-11, Scott debunks the tired tropes and myths surrounding the terror war and gives us some real background into the Middle East and American relations such as:

  • How Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan kicked off the interventions during the Soviet-Afghan war in the 1980’s and the arming and funding of Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda.
  • Why Bill Clinton’s brutal sanctions of Iraq and stationing troops in Arabia were the direct reasons Bin Laden gave for his attack on the towers on 9-11.
  • How George W. Bush’s disastrous war in Iraq helped lead to the rise of the Islamic state, Barack Obama’s funding and arming of Al Qaeda in Syria and Libya in an attempt to contain Iranian influence, and how Donald Trump continues backing the radical Sunni jihadists in the Saudi war against Yemen.

Scott also gives his keen insight into the current issues of the day as only he can and answers the questions:

  • What was the real reason behind Soleimani being in Iraq and was he there on a peace mission with the Saudis?
  • Does Trump truly want war with Iran or is he doing the bidding of the neoconservatives?
  • Why are young people so easily propagandized into going to war and what can the right wing of America do to hold Trump to his promise to bring the troops home?

About the Guests:
Scott Horton is the author of Fool’s Errand: Time to End the War in Afghanistan, FoolsErrand.us, managing director of the Libertarian Institute at LibertarianInstitute.org, editorial director of Antiwar.com, host of Antiwar Radio on Pacifica, 90.7 FM KPFK in Los Angeles and KUCR 88.3 in Riverside, California and podcasts the Scott Horton Show from this website.

In 2007, Horton won the Austin Chronicle‘s “Best of Austin” award for his Iraq war coverage on Antiwar Radio. He’s conducted more than 5,000 interviews since 2003.

His articles have appeared at Antiwar.com The American Conservative, the History News Network, The Future of Freedom, The National Interest and the Christian Science Monitor, and he contributed a chapter to the 2019 book, The Impact of War.
He is a fan of, but no relation to the lawyer from Harper’s.

Scott lives in Austin, Texas with his wife, investigative reporter Larisa Alexandrovna Horton.

TTS 236 Rob Viglione Horizen

I am listening to #TheTatianaShow with @robviglione, founder @horizenglobal Click To Tweet

On this episode of The Tatiana Show, our friend from the crypto space Rob Viglione stops by. Rob is the co-founder of the Horizen project formerly known as Zencash. Launched in May 2017, Horizen is a cutting-edge technology platform that allows real life use beyond its Zen cryptocurrency. It includes the ability to implement sidechains and integrate third party technologies by using a hub and spoke type architecture.

Rob shares with Josh and Tatiana the recent breakthroughs in sidechain technology at the company and provides the major benefits they will bring such as:

  • Scalability- The sidechain will be completely independent from the main chain, so the core client doesn’t require any modifications.
  • Safety- Any possible security issues will be bound inside the sidechain and are limited only to the sidechain balance in the main chain.
  • Decentralization- Sidechains can be run without the need of a central authority or trusted parties to validate the cross chain transfers.
  • SDK(Software Development Kits)- Horizen’s sidechains allow for unlimited software languages and the ability to customize the logic or data with no limitations.

Rob responds to critics of crypto and blockchain who accuse the technology of being used only for drug dealers, pornographers, and money launderers. We ponder if it’s possible to have good regulation and whether we’d like to see blockchain go mainstream. We also discuss how decentralization is the key for blockchain and crypto to avoid the pitfalls of the current fiat system.

About the Guests:
Rob is the Team Lead and Co-founder of Horizen, a blockchain platform that aims to enable an application-rich and inclusive ecosystem through its leading-edge sidechain solutions. Formally a trained physicist, mathematician, and military officer, Rob’s experience working on satellite radar, space launch vehicles, and combat support intelligence informed much of his understanding of how blockchain technology could change the trajectory of global societies.

Rob holds his Bachelor of Physics and Actuarial Mathematics, an MBA in Finance & Marketing, and is a PhD candidate in finance at the University of South Carolina where he researches cryptocurrency and teaches a class on blockchain in finance.

Josh and I had an interesting conversation with Gene Epstein who hosts The Soho Forum, a monthly debate series held in Manhattan.  It features topics of special interest to libertarians, and aims to enhance social and professional ties within the NYC political community.

Some of the topics we discuss include artificial intelligence and its effects on the service industry, autonomous vehicles and the need for truck and taxi drivers, and testing crypto theories.

We also dove into the discussion involving Facebook Coin and whether similar institutions can be trusted to not inflate their currency.

About the Guests:

Gene Epstein has recently stepped down from a 26-year stint as Economics and Books Editor of Barron’s, with plans to write long-form articles and books. His last published book was  Econospinning: How to Read between the Lines when the Media Manipulate the Numbers. He has taught economics at the City University of New York and St. John’s University, and worked as a senior economist for the New York Stock Exchange.
